NWWRF: A RECAP

alcyonmassivenwwrf

WOW! What an amazing weekend! From start to finish, The Northwest World Reggae Festival was an experience that I'll treasure forever.

Pulling into the festival, we were meeted with friendly faces and kindly directed into the "bowl" of the festival grounds where we were to set up the Massive Family booth. I was stoked beyond words to be placed right beside the Wise Lion booth, who hooked me up with a beautiful Organic T-Shirt with a Lion pon di front! ( the same one I wore on stage :-). The location of the booth also provided a sweet front row view all weekend.

The food was incredible...from vegan tempeh rueben sandwiches to organic lavender chocolate cupcakes, the NWWRF food boothes hooked it up big time! Big respekt to Kitchen Dances, Far Side Cafe, Hailey's Commet, and Cafe Mam for keeping it ITAL for tha phamily! Also, Much Love and grattitude to tha mamma's cookin' up the Itals backstage for the artists! Best hospitality I've experienced all summer, Thank Yall!

The music was perfect at NWWRF. Friday night with The Green and J-Boog provided the perfect blend of tunes to set the weekend vibes right and Marcia Griffiths taking it home with hit after solid hit! (One of my favorite NWWRF moments was watching some dreadies rock out to Marcia's #1 hit, "Electric Slide"). On Saturday the crowd was taken on a mystical journey with the sounds of Bamboo Station and Midnite, definatley one of my all time favorite Midnite shows to date! (check out the video here) Big Raspekt to Bill for tha video. I spent most of Sunday getting ready for the performance later on that evening. I was very thankful to have the cast of musicians that i did for this show including the Eleven Eyes horn section and the sensational Acoustic Minds for some beautiful vocal harmonies! Sashamon was there with Uncle Issaic and brought some serious Aloha vibez to tha stage alongside the Escort Service. After Sasha, I played my set with a beautiful Oregon sunset developing behind me...very magical. After me came the Argentinian reggae empress, Alika, bringing some much needed Goddess Fyiah! Closing the evening was none other than Clinton Fearon & The Boogie Brown Band . For those who stayed up for the dancehall Sunday night, DJ. Crown (Brimstone Sounds) held it down with Messenjah Selah pon the mic....EPIC! Big love to Messenjah for keeping it real and being one of the funniest Toasters I've ever experienced! Keep it Love inna di Dancehall!

I can't thank yall enough for coming out and creating the vibration that yall did. So many beautiful smiling faces, so much love! I wanna give a huge shout out to Doug Carnie, Lindsay Love, and all of the many beautiful people who help make this magical gathering of Rasta Livity possible. Bless UP and I'll see you next year at NWWRF!
JAHHHHHH! RASTAFARI!

OCF & ROTR: a recap :-)

alcyonmassiveoregoncountryfair

Yes Iyah!!!! Praises unto the Most High for such a beautiful summer festival season! I'm sorry to have been lagging on the blogging, but I've been busy with festivals, making music, and, of course, my family. It's been a blast rolling around in the Suburu meeting beautiful people in beautiful places. Trading ideas, theories, pearls of wisdom and business cards ;-) .

You never know who you're gonna run into at festivals and Oregon Country Fair was no different. I was invited to play the Front Porch stage run by the folks at Spoken Word Camp (some of the warmest and most kind-hearted souls i've ever had the pleasure of meeting) and was then given a ride up to the super sweet "spoken word" camp. I was then invited inside the house to sit down and speak with Grandma Aggie for a couple of minutes! While sitting with Grandma, In walks none other than Patch Adams, who earlier gave an inspirational speech at the front porch stage. Leaving that room I had a smile from ear to ear....what a blessing! Infinite Thanks to Robert, Laura, Camille, and the rest of the Oregon Country Fair Family for one of the coolest, most memorable weekends of my life.

Then it was off to Reggae On The River down in Humboldt County for the next weekend. I was pretty nervous on Saturday when Scotty and I found out that the keyboardist we had hired was double booked. We got REALLY nervous when we found out the replacement for the double-booked keysie was ALSO double-booked. So with an hour to the set, Coot, from Mystic Roots, stepped up to the plate and handled business!! Big respect for that one brutha!!! My favorite show of the whole weekend was J. Boog's set with his badass band! There's something to be said about the all male backup vocals.... gotta love big ol' Bruddah's singing such high notes!

On Sunday we were joined by Taz, The Celebrity Horns, and the Acoustic Minds for the set. Due to our set being at 12 in the afternoon, I was gifted the opportunity to chill out for the rest of the day. During that time I got to reason with a bunch of artists whose music has been very influential to my musical path since i arrived on the west coast. Getting to trade words with Jah Sun , Soulmedic, and Ishi Dube was heart-warming and inspirational.

I wanna give a HUGE BIG UPS to Scottie One Drop and the rest of the musicians that devoted their time and energy to perform with me: Scottie, Captain, Rahjah, Taz, Balboa, Daniel, Jenni, and Amanda! Yall some beautiful people and it's an honor to play with yall! Can't wait for NWWRF!!!

I feel more than blessed to have these opportunities to share my medicine and songs all across the west coast. Thank you to all who support the scene!!! I'm exited as ever to play this year's Northwest World Reggae Festival taking place August 12,13,14 and I hope to see all yall deh!!! It's gonna be one to remember for sure!!!!!

Blessed Love - Alcyon
